Pay no attention to the stupid urban legend in front of the curtain.

#Hanging munchkin wizard of oz movie#
I have a few different copies of the movie that were made before 1989 (2 VHS tapes and a Laserdisc), and even then there was no hanging munchkin on any of them. But resolution wasn’t good enough back in 1939 to actually present a clear image when frozen and magnified, so the rumor persists that the movement seen in the background is that of a hanging man. Not only that, most people that actually believe this crap say the hanging munchkin can be spotted in any old home video copy of the movie made before 1989. Do you seriously think someone on a major film set could climb up a fake prop tree, tie a rope to a branch, tie the rope into a noose, place the noose over his or her neck, and then leap to his or her death without any of the crew noticing? Including the actors kick-ball-dancing towards said hanging person, actors who surely would have stopped dead in their tracks over the horror in front of them? Not a lovesick munchkin tired of life, hanging himself in despair at the back of The Wizard of Oz set. This "midget suicide" is a particularly stupid urban legend, and considering how stupid most urban legends are, that's saying something. Nothing has been altered other than the resolution. A group of children will be swaying back and forth. If you look closely in the background of the trees (sort of near the ground) you will see it happen. I'm going to dig up my old VHS copy and compare. Supposedly one of the actors who played a munchkin killed himself by hanging. All of them seem to talk about a love striken. Over many years, our inbox has been filled with reports such as these. Collected by Email, 2011 In the Wizard of Oz, on the scene where Dorothy is with the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man, in the background a Munchkin, is hanging. In case you have no idea what I'm talking about, here's a clip of the scene in question: The Hanging Munchkin legend is one of the most prominent urban legends, popping up here and there every now and than. It seems like it's zoomed in, the bird has been added in, and it's shorter (fades out sooner). From what I remember of the VHS version, it looked like the backdrop moved and someone walked onto the set.then, they climbed up one of the trees.finally, you see them jump off of it, hanging from a rope and swinging from side to side.I don't know if that's what happened for sure, but that's how I remember it. Can anyone shed some light on this? I don't know that I ever really believed the whole "munchkin suicide" rumor, but I am almost certain that the scene was different before. Now all of a sudden, it's there, clear as day. I know VHS quality wasn't that great, but I think I would've noticed a large bird moving around inthe background. The supposed "munchkin suicide" scene has been altered. However, one of the most nefarious urban legends surrounding the movie was birthed in the form of a claim that a lovelorn actor portraying a munchkin hanged. Last night, I finally watched it on Blu-ray and I noticed something. Until last night, the last home video version of Wizard of Oz that I had watched was the 30th Anniversary VHS:
